Church Chairs and Tables in Kenya: How Many to Buy and Which Type
By Foldable Tables and Chairs Kenya, Nairobi · Published

Quick answer: Allow roughly 0.7 to 0.9 square metres of floor space per seated person, including aisles, to estimate how many chairs your church hall can hold. Most churches choose stackable white folding chairs because they stay uniform, clear away quickly for other events, and last longer than basic plastic chairs. Add a few long tables for fundraisers, weddings and meals.
Church furniture works harder than almost any other seating in Kenya. The same chairs serve Sunday services, midweek fellowships, weddings, funerals, harambees and youth events, and they are often lent out to members. Buying the right type and quantity the first time saves the church money for years.
How Many Chairs Does Your Church Need?
Start with the floor area. Measure the length and width of the hall in metres and multiply them. Then divide by 0.8 for a rough seat count in rows with aisles. For example, a hall 15 metres long and 10 metres wide is 150 square metres, which seats roughly 185 people.
| Hall size | Floor area | Approximate seats in rows |
|---|---|---|
| 10m × 8m | 80 m² | 90 to 110 |
| 15m × 10m | 150 m² | 165 to 210 |
| 20m × 12m | 240 m² | 265 to 340 |
| 25m × 15m | 375 m² | 415 to 535 |
Leave a main aisle of at least 1.2 metres and keep doors and exits clear. Then compare the result with your actual attendance. Buy for your typical Sunday plus about 10 percent, and borrow or hire for the few big days a year such as Easter or a large funeral.
White Folding Chairs vs Basic Plastic Chairs
Many churches start with one-piece plastic chairs because they are cheap. They do not fold, they take up a lot of room when stacked, and the legs tend to crack or splay after heavy use. Steel-frame folding chairs cost more per piece but fold flat, stack up to 15 high, and hold heavier adults safely.
- Clear the hall fast: folding chairs pack away in minutes when the hall is needed for a meal or a youth event.
- Uniform rows: one model of white chair looks neat in photos of weddings and services.
- Safer for adults: our white folding chair is rated to 150kg.
- Outdoor use: chairs can be carried out for compound services, funerals and harambees.
For the pastor’s area, elders and visitors who sit through long services, consider a few padded folding chairs.
Tables a Church Actually Uses
| Use | Best table |
|---|---|
| Fundraiser and harambee meals, weddings, buffets | 1.8m tables, about 8 to 10 people each |
| Sunday school and youth groups | 1.5m tables, easier for volunteers to carry |
| Offering, registration and welcome desks | 1.2m tables, compact and light |
| Book and merchandise stalls on church days | 1.2m or 1.8m depending on space |
All our foldable tables have white plastic tops that wipe clean after meals and do not swell if left out in rain on the compound.
Budgeting and Committee Approval
- Ask for a written quotation with item prices, quantity and delivery cost to table at the committee meeting.
- Consider buying in phases: chairs first, then tables at the next fundraiser.
- Ask about bulk pricing. Orders of 10 pieces or more qualify for wholesale rates.
- Some churches rent chairs to members for family functions, which pays for repairs and replacements over time.
Look After the Church’s Furniture
Mark each chair underneath with the church name using a paint marker so lent chairs come back. Keep a simple lending book. Store chairs stacked and tables folded in a dry room, and wipe them after outdoor use. See our cleaning guide for stubborn stains.
